STAR method interview answers: a fast template with examples
How to answer behavioral interview questions with Situation, Task, Action, Result — a fill-in template, a worked example and common mistakes.
Quick answer
Answer behavioral questions in four parts: Situation (one sentence of context), Task (your responsibility), Action (what you did — most of the answer), Result (a measurable outcome). Aim for 60–90 seconds.
Fill-in template
Situation: "At [company], [problem] was hurting [metric]."
Task: "I owned [goal] by [deadline]."
Action: "I [step 1], [step 2] and [step 3]."
Result: "[Metric] improved by [number], and [lasting impact]."
Worked example
Question: Tell me about a time you handled a conflict.
S: Two engineers disagreed on an architecture before a launch. T: As lead I needed a decision in 48 hours. A: I ran a 30-minute trade-off session, wrote the options down and asked each to argue the other side. R: We shipped on time and the team adopted the format for later decisions.
Common mistakes
Too much Situation, not enough Action.
Saying "we" so the interviewer can't tell what you did.
No number in the Result.
